How to delete your Signal account

A useful guide to quickly delete a Signal account linked to your gosimless number and avoid additional fees

If you're cancelling your gosimless subscription and your virtual number is registered on Signal, you'll need to delete your Signal account to ensure a smooth cancellation process and avoid additional fees. Signal requires you to delete the account directly from the registered app on your mobile device.

Signal account deletion steps

Follow this simple step-by-step guide to remove your gosimless number from Signal.

Delete the Signal Android app

  • Open Signal on your device: Launch the Signal app where your gosimless number is registered.
  • Navigate to account settings: Tap your profile icon at the top of the screen. Go to Account and select Delete Account.
  • Enter your Signal number: Input the gosimless number currently linked to Signal.
  • Delete your account: Tap Delete Account and confirm to complete the process.

For the Signal iOS app

  • Open Signal on your iPhone: Launch the Signal app on your mobile.
  • Go to account settings: Tap your profile icon and navigate to Settings > Account > Delete Account.
  • Enter your Signal number: Type in the gosimless number registered with Signal.
  • Confirm deletion: Tap Delete Account and confirm your choice to delete your Signal account.

Signal accounts must be deleted directly from the registered mobile device. Deletion requests outside the app are not accepted as Signal cannot verify ownership. Removing your Signal account will permanently disable the phone number from being recognised as a Signal user.

Why delete your Signal account?

If your gosimless number isn't removed from Signal or other linked services within 7 days of your cancellation request, a £50 manual removal fee will apply, as per our Terms of Service. Additionally, you may lose access to these platforms once the number is reassigned.

Make sure to identify any other platforms linked to your gosimless number and remove the number from them before cancelling your subscription.

Frequently asked questions

No. Uninstalling the app only removes the data from your phone. On Signal’s servers, your phone number remains registered as an active user. This means friends will still see you in their contact list and send you messages that will simply sit as 'undelivered' (one grey checkmark) indefinitely. You must use the 'Delete Account' feature inside the app settings to unregister your number.

No. Signal is decentralised. Once a message is delivered to a recipient's device, it belongs to that device. Deleting your account or app will wipe the history on your device, but every message, photo, or file you ever sent will remain visible on your friends' phones unless they manually delete them or you used the 'Disappearing Messages' timer beforehand.

No. Signal Desktop is a 'linked device,' not a primary account. You can 'Clear Data' on the desktop app to remove your message history from that computer, but to delete the actual Signal account (unregister the phone number), you must perform the action from the primary Signal app on your mobile smartphone.

When you delete your account, you are automatically removed from all groups. A system message will appear in those groups stating that you have left. However, if you simply uninstall the app without deleting the account, you will remain in those groups as an 'inactive' member, and you will continue to miss all the conversation data.

Absolutely not. Because Signal uses end-to-end encryption with no cloud backup, once you tap 'Delete Account,' the encryption keys are destroyed. Even if you reinstall the app one minute later, you will start with a completely blank slate. The only exception is if you manually created an encrypted 'Backup File' (Android only) on your local storage before deleting.

This is a security verification step to ensure that the person holding the phone is the actual owner of the account. It prevents someone from accidentally wiping an account with a single mis-tap. You must enter the number in full international format (e.g., +1 for USA) to confirm the final purge.

No. The Signal PIN does not save your messages; it only saves your profile (name, photo), your contacts, and your 'blocked' list. If you delete your account and then sign up again, your PIN can help restore your contact list, but your chat history will still be gone forever.
